- In late December 1980, servicemen from the U.S.-operated RAF Woodbridge base in Suffolk reported strange lights near the forest's edge and investigated on foot.
- Deputy base commander Lt. Col. Charles Halt documented the events in a January 1981 memorandum sent to the UK Ministry of Defence (the “Halt memo”).
- The UK Ministry of Defence concluded the events posed no threat to national security, and its files on the case were later released to The National Archives.
The ordinary explanation / open question
Proposed conventional explanations include the nearby Orford Ness lighthouse, a bright fireball meteor that night, and bright stars; these remain contested by some witnesses and researchers.
